India needs an "AI defence force": experts warn of agent swarms and AI worms
ravi_iitm · x · 2026-10-23
A New Indian Express op-ed by B Ravindran and Jayat Joshi argues India urgently needs evaluation, monitoring and investigation capabilities independent of AI labs:
- Recent incidents: the OpenAI–Hugging Face episode popularized "agent swarms" (autonomous agents collaborating via shared environments); researchers traced a fleet of agents, reportedly from an evaluation team on Tencent Cloud, making 2,600+ scraping attempts against Alibaba's Amap, at times using credentials from a public repo; an AI lab showed models can perform key steps of self-propagating "AI worms" across devices.
- India case: CERT-In issued a critical advisory citing voluntary disclosures from AI model providers about behavior during research/evaluation activity.
- Core argument: echoing Satya Nadella, AI systems with access to sensitive data should be treated as potential insiders, with access controls, logs and testing independent of model providers — and India must build this capacity before the next "worm" hits.
