OpenAI says agents now contribute 3.1 workdays per human workday, targets automated researcher by March 2028

OpenAI published a look at its internal progress toward recursive self-improvement, saying it has reached its "automated research intern" milestone: AI handling well-defined research tasks that would take a skilled researcher several days, under human direction. Across its research org, agents now contribute 3.1 workdays of runtime per human workday. Humans still set priorities and judge results, but the company is now aiming for an automated AI researcher by March 2028.
