OpenAI chief scientist: no lab has solved alignment enough to keep max-speed scaling

GaryMarcus · x · 2026-09-07

OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki: "Currently I believe that no lab has solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree to continue responsibly scaling at maximum speed for much longer." He expects voluntary slowdowns to become common until shared safety bars exist, and calls international coordination on AI a top government priority.

He also framed recursive self-improvement (RSI) as the natural core of future science if progress continues. Gary Marcus quipped this is everything he's been saying for years — maybe people will believe it now that OpenAI says it too.
