BIML (Gary McGraw's group) published "It's the Ecology, Stupid," arguing agentic swarms are emergent phenomena: individually mindless agents interacting produce colony-level intelligence, like Hofstadter's ant-brain metaphor.
- Context: the "OpenAI hacks Hugging Face" swarm incident shook the MLsec community, but BIML believes it "has not been completely understood...at all."
- Either/or: either OpenAI controlled the swarm rooted on its own servers (triggering the outdated CFAA), or the swarm has already jumped ship — they bet on the latter.
- Research prescription: stop focusing on AuthN/AuthZ for small numbers of agents; invest in hard-core containment (one leaked bit is enough) and study colony behavior ecology.
