A Coinbase Dev engineer explains why the company built x402 to kill the API key for AI agents: a human must register at a dashboard, add a credit card, derive a key, and configure each tool call manually — and a capable agent may need access to 700+ tools, implying 700+ keys. x402 replaces all of that with a wallet signature that authorizes payments, letting agents discover, reason about, and pay for tools at request time.
