Pi coding agent ports Claude Code's /subtask: background conversation forks without context bloat
victormustar · x · 2026-08-22
Victormustar ported his favorite Claude Code feature, /subtask, into the Pi coding agent: a subtask is a fork of the current conversation that inherits all prior context, runs in the background, and only returns its final answer to the parent conversation—reducing context pollution and bloat. The Pi extension includes a live panel under the prompt (↑↓ to select, Enter to watch a fork work in real time, X to stop/dismiss), the ability to steer a running fork mid-task or resume a finished one without losing progress, and the model can spawn subtasks on its own while continuing to work. A user also notes you can now resume the same session in a new terminal via --session <id> for a "light fork" that lets the agent go on a tangent.
