EITWatch: Smartwatch Uses Backside Electrodes for Over 90% Hand Gesture Recognition

A new smartwatch gesture recognition research named EITWatch is coming soon to UIST 2026. The device utilizes 8 flat electrodes on the case back (35 channels at 48Hz) to perform multi-depth scans of subcutaneous muscles to accurately capture hand gestures.
The system achieved over 90% accuracy in tests involving 12 subjects. Notably, the project's hardware and firmware are fully open-source.
