US Roboticists Smuggle Parts in Luggage; China Hits 97% of Humanoid Shipments

American robotics startups are facing severe hardware iteration bottlenecks due to a significant supply chain gap, reports The Information. Many US founders fly to Shenzhen to buy parts, or even purchase whole Unitree humanoids, disassemble them, and pack the pieces into suitcases on commercial flights. Some even forge battery labels to bypass airline limits.
This reliance stems from China's unmatched supply chain speed and density. A company that relocated from California to Shanghai noted that changing a camera lens used to take a month remotely; now an engineer can bike 15 minutes to the supplier and finish testing the same afternoon. Silicon Valley has spawned middlemen who consolidate scattered US orders and handle logistics via Taobao and WeChat.
Data shows Chinese makers accounted for over 97% of global humanoid robot shipments in H1 2026. While the US has the models and capital, the physical execution layer remains firmly in China's hands.
