A reply argues that Chinese AI companies may already have a combined research capability that exceeds their US counterparts.

The point is that even after accounting for distillation, fast-following, and other structural advantages on the US side, the compute, spend, and headcount gap is so large that China still “should” be further behind than it appears. The author adds that there is still meaningful gradation within China itself, and says if V4-Pro keeps improving faster than Flash, DeepSeek could plausibly be the best lab in the world for a stretch.
