AI startups need a better future story as public approval sinks and doom narratives dominate
ashleymayer · x · 2026-08-04
Ashley Mayer argues that the AI industry is failing at its narrative job: the biggest players dominate the conversation, but the public story around AI is increasingly defined by electricity costs, mental-health concerns, Pentagon clashes, and fears of white-collar obsolescence.
Her counterpoint is that startups have a structural advantage. They can speak more directly to customers than to investors, and they are better positioned to give people a reason to root for the future rather than dread it.
