NBER Paper: Automation Strips Work of Meaning, Potentially Harming Workers

Economist Joshua S. Gans argues in a new NBER working paper that automation can disrupt workers negatively even without replacing them.

The presence of a credible machine alternative weakens the intrinsic meaning of a task—knowing the output depends on one's own contribution. This 'meaning externality' can lower the value of human work, trigger wage adjustments, and make socially harmful development highly profitable.
