Unpacking RSI: Four Dimensions of AI Self-Improvement and Their Hard Ceilings
jachiam0 · x · 2026-08-03
The author argues that the concept of Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) problematically conflates four distinct dimensions:
- Changes in goals and alignment
- General intelligence level
- Task knowledge
- Science and technology knowledge
He suggests that rapid changes or explosions could occur separately across these areas. Furthermore, dimensions 3 and 4 face hard ceilings based on currently available data. A lack of adequately instrumented physical infrastructure for measurement and experimentation also imposes strict limits on self-improvement.
