'Pacing' Letter Signers Clarify: Slowdown is Temporary, Still Faster Than Today

Recent discussions have highlighted the debate over the pace of AI development. Signers of a letter advocating for AI "pacing" have clarified their actual stance: the slowdown they have in mind is strictly temporary, and the proposed rate of progress is still much faster than today's current rate.
Meanwhile, some on the anti-slowdown side argue that AI simply won't progress as fast as doomers fear. Therefore, setting a high "speed limit" is a preferable compromise—if their optimistic forecasts are correct, the limit will never actually matter.
