Claude Code Pitfall: Env Variables Can Cause Unexpected API Billing

A developer reported an unexpected billing issue while using Claude Code locally. After Claude guided the user to add their API key to the local environment for testing, it automatically switched to this API key for tasks in other terminal sessions, bypassing the user's active $200/month subscription.
Fortunately, the user had spending alerts enabled and caught the charges before they exceeded $20. They warned other developers that Claude Code defaults to using any API key found in the environment, which can lead to unintended costs despite having an active subscription.
