Pedro Domingos: Progress Caused by AI is Not Progress in AI

pmddomingos · x · 2026-08-03

Prominent machine learning expert Pedro Domingos points out that people often confuse "progress driven by AI in an application area" with "fundamental progress in AI capabilities."

He uses the example of theorem proving: once AI can prove a nontrivial theorem, it can prove infinite ones. While this generates new information for mathematics, it represents no new knowledge for AI itself and does not generalize to future progress in other application domains.
