Anthropic's economic research team analyzed 400,000 privacy-preserving Claude Code sessions to explore the practical performance and economic value of agentic coding.
Key Findings:
- Collaboration Patterns: In a typical session, humans make most of the planning decisions (what to do), while Claude handles most execution decisions (how to do it). The greater the user's domain expertise, the more work Claude accomplishes per instruction.
- Converging Success Rates: On coding tasks, success rates for almost all major occupations are nearly on par with those of software engineers.
- Rising Task Value: Over the observed seven months, the share of time spent debugging fell by nearly half, shifting towards end-to-end agentic use like deploying code, analyzing data, and writing non-code documents. Compared against freelance job postings, the value of the typical task rose by an average of 25%.
The report concludes that while AI tools heavily compress execution, domain expertise remains the core driver of better outcomes.
