Codex desktop on Windows can crash its GPU process when taking screenshots
A GitHub issue against openai/codex reports that on Windows 10, Codex desktop 26.715.4045.0 can become slow, freeze, or fail to reopen after an agent uses the built-in browser to capture a webpage screenshot.
The reported chain is:
- Windows Code Integrity logs Event 3033 for the packaged vkswiftshader.dll
- Chromium’s GPU child process crashes and relaunch fails
- Page.captureScreenshot cannot complete
The affected MSIX package itself appears healthy, and a Microsoft Store repair restores startup, but the issue may recur. The report includes Windows 10 Pro 22H2, an RTX 4060 Ti, and NVIDIA driver 581.57 as the test environment.
