Anthropic's $1.5B Piracy Settlement Marks Major Fair Use Win for AI

Anthropic will pay $1.5 billion to book authors in a record copyright class action settlement. However, the penalty is strictly for downloading approximately 482,460 pirated books.
Crucially, the judge previously ruled that training AI on legally obtained books is "transformative" and falls under fair use. This makes the outcome a massive legal victory for AI labs.
