Northwestern Drone Uses Motion Blur to Vanish from Human Vision

Northwestern engineers built a drone that uses motion blur to become nearly invisible to the human eye.
The system, called “Phantom Twist,” uses one motor and one propeller; the propeller spins in one direction while the body counter-rotates up to 25 times per second. Instead of camouflage, it exploits the limits of human perception so the vehicle smears into the background.
The team says the design is about 10× less visible than a normal quadcopter, and that AI helped rearrange the components by scoring designs against a human-vision model rather than relying on hand tuning.
