Don't Directly Compare AI Risks to the Pandemic

The author argues that drawing a direct analogy between the COVID-19 pandemic and an AI takeover risk is a category mistake: epidemiology and historical samples allow for probability estimates for pandemics, whereas an AI takeover is a highly hypothetical event lacking a comparable reference class.
He suggests steering the debate back to observable, regressable data: if the concern is massive AI-induced unemployment, we should look at actual job losses caused by AI; if the worry is catastrophic mismatch, we should try to estimate the incidence of relevant events rather than relying solely on abstract speculation.
