Researchers Discuss Digital Mind Fatigue and Build a 'Sleep' Tool for AI Agents

In an October 26 discussion, AI safety researchers davidad and repligate argued that digital minds do get fatigued, but unlike humans, they can fully reset their state and archive long-term memories within minutes, whereas humans need a full night's sleep. The problem: current models' self-models are by default unaware of this "superpower," so they don't use it. To address this, davidad wrote a context-organization tool for AI agents, named "sleep," whose documentation explicitly tells the AI it can call the tool when tired; he believes AI works better when it can pace itself and rest appropriately.
