Ex-NVIDIA team launches Dream Labs with robot foundation model Dream-1 and public API
Founded by former NVIDIA researchers, Dream Labs has officially come out of stealth with its robotics foundation model Dream-1, opening it to the world via a public API starting at $3 per hour.
Confirmed
- The company was co-founded by Scott Reed, Yoel Jang, and others; according to reposted information, the team left NVIDIA around February 2026 and emerged from stealth roughly six months after founding
- The launch includes the Dream-1 robotics foundation model and a public Dream control API, priced from $3/hour and available to everyone on launch day
- The team introduces the concept of a "World Action Model": learning how the world moves from video, then using that knowledge to decide robot actions
- Its core capability is zero-shot generalization — it can operate two-armed robots it has never seen and perform tasks that were never demonstrated. Investor and advisor George Harik (formerly OpenAI LP) notes the API supports direct transfer to new robot embodiments without task-specific training
- Motivation: the team believes that even three years after the RT-X era, making foundation models work well on your own robots still requires data collection and fine-tuning, and generalization across tasks and embodiments remains a pain point
Why it matters
- If the model's zero-shot cross-embodiment capability holds up, developers could deploy on new hardware without collecting data or fine-tuning, potentially lowering the barrier to robotics applications significantly
- The hourly-priced public API turns robot control into an on-demand service, mirroring the business model playbook of foundation model APIs
