a16z's 7th Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps adds revenue ranking, revealing a power-user economy
On October 5, a16z released the seventh edition of its "Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps" report, partnering with YipitData to expand the list from Top 100 to Top 150 and, for the first time, adding a consumer spending revenue ranking alongside the web traffic and mobile traffic lists. Claude's web visits are approaching 1 billion.
Confirmed
- Only 11 products made their debut this edition, the fewest newcomers across all seven editions, indicating a stabilizing top-tier landscape.
- Payments are highly concentrated at the top: fewer than 5% of Americans pay for AI; on consumer cards alone, the top 1% of users spend $903 per month on AI (even more for work), and this 1% generates more revenue than the bottom 50% of paying users combined.
- Partners Olivia Moore and Josh Elman noted that only 13% of users who pay for one AI tool will pay for another, with most payers subscribing only to ChatGPT; heavy users behave more like prosumers, buying tools to automate work and build and promote products.
- On revenue structure, AI revenue overwhelmingly comes from subscriptions and usage-based payments rather than advertising, inverting the earlier ad-driven internet business model. Despite low overall willingness to pay, ChatGPT by paid subscription count has already broken into the global top twenty consumer products, with most other spots held by media companies and retailers like Amazon and Costco.
- Of the 50 companies on the revenue ranking, 29 don't appear on either the web or mobile traffic lists; only 7 make all three lists—revenue, web, and mobile: ChatGPT, Claude, Canva, Suno, Perplexity, and others (the post's list is incomplete).
- Subscription landscape: ChatGPT leads Claude and Gemini by roughly 3x in US paid subscribers, with an even larger gap globally; over the past six months Claude has overtaken DeepSeek and Grok in traffic and Gemini in subscriptions, but per m11 its US paid subscribers have declined since May while ChatGPT has re-accelerated.
- Consumer agents remain extremely early-stage: Muse's early downloads were a fraction of Threads' launch figures; existing agent users concentrate on coding and automated workflows, with travel another fast-growing category. A wave of consumer personal-assistant products has emerged after OpenClaw—Muse and Instinct missed this edition's data cutoff but already lead in traffic.
Why it matters
- With revenue data introduced for the first time, the ranking reveals an extremely top-heavy AI consumer market where the heavy-user economy becomes the core business model assumption, with direct implications for startups' pricing and retention strategies.
- The large non-overlap between the revenue and traffic rankings shows that "people using it" and "people paying for it" are two different things—evaluating AI consumer products requires looking at both traffic and revenue.
