a16z Top 100 consumer AI apps: power users dominate spending, agents are just a blank box to everyone else
illscience · x · 2026-10-05
a16z released the seventh edition of its Top 100 Consumer AI Apps list, adding a new dimension: what consumers actually pay for. The data shows a striking power-user economy — only a small share of consumers pay for AI, and spending is heavily concentrated among developers, creators and other power users, raising questions about whether subscriptions can bring consumer AI to everyone. Investor Josh Elman frames the core problem: to uninitiated users an agent is just a blank box; solve that and you reach the next few hundred million adopters.
