Huawei Unveils Kirin 9050 Pro and Tri-Fold Mate XT 2
On September 7 in Guangzhou, Huawei held a global launch event to introduce the tri-fold Mate XT 2 alongside the all-new Kirin 9050 Pro, its first flagship silicon unveil in six years, and the first device to ship with HarmonyOS 7. Yu Chengdong called it the strongest Kirin chip ever and made it a headline feature of the event.
Confirmed
- The chip is built on Huawei's self-developed "Tau Scaling Law" and is billed as the world's first to use a LogicFolding architecture: shortening signal paths and stacking more transistors in a smaller area to cut latency and boost performance while reducing dependence on foreign advanced process nodes
- The Lingxi CPU gains 42% overall performance, with +24% single-core peak and +52% multi-core concurrency, and dynamic per-scenario core scheduling; @智东西 notes it is a 9-core design
- The self-developed dual-cache Maleoon GPU delivers +142% rendering performance
- NPU power consumption drops 66%, with multi-size on-device AI compute units supporting a 30B-parameter MoE model running locally
- The chip also features a new-generation Balong modem and multi-channel thermal packaging
- The Mate XT 2 launched ahead of new iPhones and Xiaomi flagships, underscoring fierce premium foldable competition; HarmonyOS 7 first arrived in beta in June; @teortaxesTex notes the launch drew heavy discussion online
Why it matters
- This is Huawei's first brand-new flagship Kirin in six years; @pstAsiatech argues the high-profile promotion signals full confidence in its supply chain security
- LogicFolding substitutes architectural innovation for process-node dependence, seen as a key path to reducing reliance on foreign advanced manufacturing
- On-device support for a 30B-parameter MoE model highlights Huawei's edge-AI push; @teortaxesTex notes analysts remain skeptical of its datacenter NPU roadmap even as the chip's on-device AI capabilities draw attention
