Figure Launches Index, World's Largest Robot Dataset, Pledging $1B Over 12 Months
On August 26, Figure founder Brett Adcock announced that the robotics data platform Index has officially launched out of stealth, billing it as the world's largest and most diverse robot training dataset. It aims to solve the problem that the data needed to scale general-purpose robots cannot be obtained from the internet. The company has committed to investing $1 billion over the next 12 months to expand the project.
Confirmed
- Data has been collected over the past 4 months via a crowdsourced app, with 16 million videos uploaded to date and processing speeds of 30 minutes of video per second
- The app has been downloaded 264,000 times across more than 100 countries (the post also mentions contributors from 108 countries)
- $15 million has been paid out to data contributors
- Data collection methods include users hiring someone to record in their home, or wearing devices to capture everyday tasks
- Figure plans to invest $1 billion over the next 12 months (as relayed by Corey Lynch)
Why it matters
- The large-scale physical-world interaction data needed for general-purpose robots cannot be readily sourced from the internet; Index builds a data moat through crowdsourcing and paid incentives, continuing Figure's data engine strategy following Helix
- Paying out a real $15 million to contributors and committing an additional $1 billion shows that data collection has become a core battleground in the humanoid robot race
