Google Gives Students a Free Year of Gemini Back-to-School Perks
On August 20, Google announced a back-to-school Gemini perk: verified US college students get one year of Google AI Pro free, while students in 140+ countries get one year of Google AI Plus free. Redemption requires SheerID student verification and a payment method on file, with the offer open until December 31, 2026; follow-up coverage on August 22 confirmed the plan is live, with US students receiving 5TB of Google One storage and Gemini Advanced access.
Confirmed
- US students get one year of Google AI Pro (originally $19.99/month, per @aitrendzxyz, with higher usage limits and 5TB storage); students in 140+ countries get Google AI Plus. Per @GeminiApp, the free student benefit runs through the end of 2026 and includes 4x usage limits and 5TB storage.
- Per @aitrendzxyz, users verify student status via SheerID, sign up with a valid payment method, and get 12 months free; auto-renewal at full price applies unless cancelled. Deadline: December 31, 2026. A valid .edu email is among the eligibility requirements, per a post by @Nasereliver.
- For Indian students: a free year of Google AI Plus including Gemini Omni access, 2x usage, and 400GB storage; discounted Google AI Pro and a YouTube Premium bundle are also available (per @CodeByPoonam, @eyishazyer).
- Per @weskambale, university students in Africa can join the plan with 4x usage limits and 5TB storage.
- Google also launched student-focused features: Student Center, study notes, interactive visualizations (including 3D), and Gemini Live.
- @OkStudent2921 noted the Gemini Student Plan, previously discontinued, has returned with discounted subscriptions.
Why it matters
- A free year of premium subscription is a tangible benefit that helps Google build habits among young and education users, competing with OpenAI and others for the student market.
- Benefits vary notably by region (US Pro vs. Plus elsewhere, differing storage and limits), and auto-renewal at full price applies after the free year, so students should check their region's terms and renewal settings before signing up.
