Z.ai Reportedly Launches 1GW Data Center with Domestic Chips
According to Bloomberg, Z.ai has built a 1-gigawatt (1GW) AI data center in China and has partially begun operations. The facility reportedly relies entirely on Chinese-made chips, independent of Nvidia, and is primarily used to train next-generation GLM models. This development has drawn significant attention, as it not only showcases an incredibly massive compute infrastructure scale (equivalent to powering roughly 750,000 households simultaneously) but also marks the entry of domestic AI chips into the actual training phase of frontier large models.
Controversy and Skepticism
Regarding the staggering "1GW" figure, user @zacharynado raised doubts. He pointed out that if estimated based on "multiple 10,000+ chip clusters," the facility's actual chip load is more likely around 75 to 100MW. Therefore, the so-called 1GW might merely represent the approved power capacity or the overall planned scale of the campus, rather than the compute hardware currently deployed.
Leaked Cluster Architecture Details
User @bookwormengr leaked suspected details about the center's massive architecture. According to the leak, Z.ai built an Atlas 950 SuperCluster containing approximately 524,288 Ascend chips. Architecturally, one SuperCluster consists of 64 SuperPods. Due to its massive scale and potential chip shortages, the super cluster is currently still in a "partially operational" state.
Infrastructure Capabilities and Compute Deployment
Regarding the construction progress of domestic compute centers, user @teortaxesTex believes that the "completed" facilities seen by the outside world are likely not sitting empty. Given China's strong rapid execution capabilities in power supply and civil engineering, data centers can absolutely be built first, waiting for chips to arrive and be installed later. Furthermore, recent leaked information about Huawei's Ascend 950DT chip has further sparked external interest in the actual deployment progress and hardware strength of China's domestic compute power.
