Meta Pulls Controversial Instagram AI Image Feature
Meta recently launched a highly controversial AI image generation feature on Instagram that allowed users to generate images based on public accounts' photos by @ mentioning them. Because the feature automatically opted-in all public accounts without proactively notifying the individuals involved, it sparked severe privacy concerns and user backlash, leading Meta to pull the feature within days.
Key Details and Opt-out Controversy
The feature allowed users to utilize others' public photos, Reels, stories, and avatars for AI image generation. As pointed out by @aakashgupta and @sidjustice_, Instagram set all public accounts to an "opted-in" state by default, meaning users would not be notified if someone else used their photos. This "opt-out by default" design was criticized as crossing a privacy red line. To protect their data, users had to manually navigate to their settings and disable the "Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI" option under "Sharing and reuse."
Reactions and Removal
The union SAG-AFTRA expressed strong dissatisfaction, noting that the Muse Image tool allowed the use of photos without consent, and advised all Instagram users to opt out to protect their likeness. @Shruti_0810 felt the default authorization crossed a bottom line. Facing criticism over the product's design, Meta ultimately compromised. @adariostrange relayed Meta's response: they originally intended for users to "reference" content by @ mentioning public accounts, but because external feedback deemed the design inappropriate, the company decided to remove the feature.
