Vitalik backs anti-data-center protests: algorithmic progress makes bigger compute unnecessary
paulnovosad · x · 2026-11-08
Vitalik Buterin says he doesn't agree with the strong emotional backlash against this week's anti-data-center movements: algorithmic progress means what would need bigger data centers in 2 years can be done with today's data centers in 4, probably sooner — so even total success for protesters won't cause anything apocalyptic. He argues humanity needs all the time it can get to harden against cybersecurity and looming bio risks.
Economist @paulnovosad shares the take, calling it a rare "triple negative" and agreeing the emotional backlash against the movements is unwarranted.
