Gary Marcus calls out Anthropic CEO's AI job-loss claims: 'numbers out of a hat'
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-11-08
Gary Marcus quoted Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's CNN appearance, where Amodei said AI could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within 1-5 years and described a future of 10% annual growth with 20% of people jobless. When Anderson Cooper read the numbers back, Amodei replied "That's exactly what I was getting to," adding "We're not going to prevent it just by saying everything's going to be OK." Marcus pushed back: jobs have barely moved and productivity has barely changed, yet we keep listening to CEOs who "pull numbers out of a hat" — asking which figure, the 10% or the 20%, anyone should believe.
