kmorph: open-source Linux project recovers from kernel crashes without rebooting in ~2s
kingslyj · x · 2026-11-08
Developer Cong Wang announced kmorph on LKML, a tool built on multikernel that runs two Linux kernels side by side so a machine can survive a kernel crash without rebooting.
- In tests, Nginx resumed serving requests within 2 seconds of a crash
- Unlike kdump, which costs two reboots and keeps a capture kernel idle in reserved memory, kmorph lets selected services run on the standby kernel beforehand
- Also supports kernel upgrades without a conventional reboot
- Open source, still experimental, requires a modified Linux kernel
