Amazon book releases tripled since 2022; over half of 2025 titles contain AI text few read

An NBER working paper by Imke Reimers and Joel Waldfogel finds monthly Amazon book releases tripled from 2022 to late 2025 as LLMs diffused, with AI-containing text topping half of 2025 releases. Yet AI books get far fewer readers (lower ratings, sales ranks), driving an overall decline in average usage; a nested logit calibration shows only modest consumer-surplus gains. Author selection explains most of the usage gap, and previously active authors increased output in the LLM era while keeping non-AI output stable.
