CS grad students on strike: PIs worth billions claim student research is 'coursework'
Ritwik_G · x · 2026-11-08
A discussion of CS PhD labor conditions: during a strike, PIs argued students are full-time students and "independent study" is a mandated academic duty, so research must continue. The poster asks: which part is employment and which is education — you can't have it both ways.
They add that CS has a severe wealth disparity between grad students and PIs, whose research is often commercialized by advisors with net worths in the billions, while classes are treated as pro forma.
