414.7 Gbit/s over a 287 GHz wireless link: optical heterodyne shifts C-band 16-QAM to sub-THz

Commenting on the paper "414.7-Gbit/s Single-Aperture Dual-Polarization 287 GHz Wireless Link" (Dittmer2026): a dual-polarization 287 GHz link running 16-QAM at 400+ Gbit/s. The trick: 16-QAM is easier to generate at the telecom C-band, then optically heterodyned up to 287 GHz — two ECL lasers beat in a UTC photodiode to radiate the sub-THz carrier, received after 56 m and down-converted by electronic subharmonic mixers. The author also colorfully explains on-chip filters as a labyrinth where waves get addicted, lost, or give up.
