Dev builds self-hosting platform with Claude, benchmarks it against Dokploy
mynameiscorange · reddit · 2026-11-08
A developer used Claude to write most of the code for hoist, a minimal self-hosting platform that puts a local app on a public HTTPS URL in one command (systemd + Cloudflare Tunnel), grown into push-to-deploy, rollback, databases, backups, and a dashboard.
What worked
- Insisting on zero dependencies kept the code small enough to personally review
- Demanding a real benchmark against Dokploy instead of trusting claims: the first run exposed worse deploy downtime, leading to a genuine fix — a TCP front that only switches once the new container answers
- Testing against real tools: QR codes verified with zbarimg in CI
Watch out for: features pile up easily, and every feature is something you must understand and maintain yourself. Open source at github.com/nikhilcherry/hoist.
