Chollet: Scaling Is Only a Multiplier, Smarter Methods Scale Better
fchollet · x · 2026-11-08
François Chollet responds to Richard Sutton's claim that brute-force computation is not enough for intelligence:
- Data and compute scaling are only multipliers on an approach's generalization power, not intelligence itself.
- Trillions in investment can make inefficient, low-generalization approaches look adequate, but that doesn't make them the end-all of AI.
- You should work on methods that can scale, or you can't compete — but a cleverer approach will scale better.
