springrod critiques Snowflake's context layer: SQL-only, single account, no recursion
springrod · x · 2026-11-08
Part of an X thread on "code mode." Responding to a suggestion to look at Snowflake's Cortex Code, springrod lays out where Snowflake works as a context layer and where it breaks down.
Strengths: semantic views run as real queries with governance enforced in the engine. Limitations: everything must become SQL inside one account (each API hand-wrapped first), and relationships can't recurse. Their alternative queries sources where they live, ownership chains included. A concrete illustration of the split between centralized warehouse semantic layers and in-place querying across heterogeneous data.
