Agent S4 lets agents evolve reusable computer-use interfaces from their own task experience
burkov · x · 2026-11-08
The article introduces Agent S4, tackling a key limitation of computer-use agents: they work through human-designed fixed interfaces (screenshots, clicks, keystrokes) that make routine tasks slow or unreliable, and improving them normally requires researchers to manually diagnose failures and build new tools.
Agent S4 instead lets agents evolve a repository of executable interfaces plus guidance on when to use them, drawing on their own task experience without changing the underlying model or execution framework:
- A fixed task agent runs synthetic computer-use tasks, producing interaction histories with no ground-truth success labels;
- A separate meta-agent studies those histories and proposes interface or guidance changes, progressively accumulating reusable interfaces.
The upshot: turning manual tool/interface design into an automated, experience-driven iteration loop run by a meta-agent.
