Dev open-sources local-reader: Kokoro TTS reads articles aloud on Mac and iPhone
ethanniser · x · 2026-11-08
Developer ethanniser open-sourced local-reader, an ElevenReader/Readwise-inspired reading app that reads your saved articles aloud.
- Fully local TTS: uses the Kokoro model on Mac and iPhone — no cloud speech API, no subscription
- Features: streaming audio, word-by-word highlighting, saved listening progress, adjustable playback speed, click any word to start listening from there
- Library: save articles and documents with tags, read/unread state, and cross-device sync
- The author also champions "bounded scrolling": seeing only the top 10 tweets from your feed a few times a day
MIT-licensed; the author positions it as a personal project and a starting point for others' own versions.
