Anthropic data breach email sparks backlash over 'authorized security test' framing
thedealdirector · x · 2026-11-07
A user posted the notification email they received from Anthropic about a data breach: a cybersecurity research firm accessed Anthropic's internal systems 'conducting a security testing exercise on its own initiative and without our authorisation.' The email said Anthropic 'cannot confirm whether any particular person's information was viewed' while also claiming there is 'no reason to believe you are at heightened risk,' and that the firm certified in writing it deleted the accessed data.
The poster called the reassurances a 'pinky promise.' The reposter amplified the criticism, calling Anthropic's response 'impressive gaslighting' and sarcastically predicting the company would next claim API keys abused for distillation are 'philosophically your own fault.'
