BUI decouples Blender's GPU UI kernel into a standalone runtime: 18MB memory, 12ms cold start
Obijuan_cube · x · 2026-11-07
The open-source BUI project extracts Blender's decades-old UI rendering kernel into a standalone desktop UI runtime, exposing interfaces for C/C++, Rust, Python, JS, and React.
- Motivation: developers are tired of Electron's hundreds of MB of memory overhead, while Rust's GPUI is tied to a specific editor ecosystem and hard to decouple.
- Approach: BUI reuses Blender's underlying Ghost window abstraction and immediate-mode GPU rendering pipeline. No DOM tree or virtual-node diffing — every widget is rendered in-place by dedicated shaders in VRAM, which is why Blender stays at 60fps with complex shader nodes and live viewports.
- Benchmarks: 18MB init memory, under 12ms cold-start window creation.
