IMS journals issue AI policy: no AI authorship, mandatory disclosure, reviewer limits
michaelchchoi · x · 2026-11-07
The Institute of Mathematical Statistics has published an AI use policy for its journals (including Bernoulli), effective 8 November 2026, guided by transparency and responsibility. For authors: AI may aid text preparation but not write papers or whole sections; a 'Statement on AI use' must appear before the bibliography (required even if no AI was used); plagiarism from AI's failure to attribute counts as the authors' plagiarism; only humans may be listed as authors; concealed prompts to manipulate reviewers are banned; violations can lead to rejection and temporary submission bans. For reviewers: AI use is permitted with disclosure and responsibility for report content; uploading proprietary manuscripts to AI tools that train on conversations is strictly prohibited, and editorial correspondence must not be disclosed to AI systems.
