ETH Zürich assigns unsolved open problems as AI makes textbook exercises obsolete
JeremyNguyenPhD · x · 2026-11-07
Quoting an essay by Niao He and colleagues at ETH Zürich, "Open Problems as Active Learning in the Age of AI," Jeremy Nguyen asks: how do you assign homework when AI can solve Navier-Stokes-level problems? Their BSc/MSc seminar AI4OPT gave students authentic open problems with no known solutions, letting AI into the learning process. Students didn't think less — they thought more actively, having to question, compare, diagnose, verify, and defend what they chose to accept.
