Pierce Lilholt: the ability to design life doesn't grant the wisdom to decide how it should be designed
PierceLilholt · x · 2026-11-07
Pierce Lilholt argues that an abomination need not look monstrous — an ordinary-looking life designed for an intolerable purpose is equally troubling: creatures engineered to suffer, biological systems optimized without regard for ecological consequences, life created solely to be exploited, or human enhancements that turn an advantage into a requirement for everyone else.
These scenarios differ in scientific plausibility but expose the same ethical problem: the ability to design life does not establish the wisdom to decide how life should be designed.
