5 engineering problems that emerge when you deploy 100 AI agents in production

Deploying one AI agent is easy; getting 100 to work together reliably is a different engineering challenge. The author breaks down five problems that appear at scale, with an infographic summary:
- Agent coordination: duplicate work, conflicting results, hard-to-manage dependencies → central orchestrator, clear responsibilities, task ownership
- Shared context and state: stale info, inconsistent shared memory, context loss in handoffs, token bloat → centralized state management, structured handoffs, versioned data
- Tool contention and resource limits: API rate limits, database overload, runaway parallelism → rate limiting, request queues, concurrency controls, resource-aware scheduling
- Cascading failures: blocked downstream agents, retries creating duplicates, error propagation → timeouts, retry caps, circuit breakers, idempotency, human approval for critical actions
- Observability, security, costs: hard to trace failures and per-agent token spend → distributed tracing, per-agent cost tracking, centralized logs, access controls, continuous evals
Recommended tooling includes Temporal, Langfuse, and CrewAI. Bottom line: 100 agents don't guarantee 100x productivity — good engineering does.
