Report: Nvidia asks TSMC to build 3D DRAM, adding a 4th advanced memory supplier
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-11-07
Per The Information, memory shortages have led Nvidia to ask TSMC to become a fourth advanced-memory supplier, and TSMC has begun drafting plans to make 3D DRAM chips.
- Nvidia currently buys advanced memory only from Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron; a fourth supplier means more supply and less pricing power for the incumbents.
- It builds on Nvidia's reported October requirement that all three memory makers use TSMC's 3nm process for custom HBM base dies, so Nvidia can shift volume during shortages.
- 3D DRAM stacks cells vertically for density; no incumbent has a mature product yet, and TSMC holds its own vertical DRAM patents. No production timeline set; TSMC weighs new fabs or converting existing ones while keeping logic foundry as its core focus.
