ChatGPT hit 50% weekly US adoption in under 4 years, faster than smartphones

Felix Simon notes that since ChatGPT's public launch in November 2022, it took less than four years for generative AI to go from near-zero usage to half the US population using it weekly in high-income countries. For comparison, smartphones took around 5 years to reach 50% adoption in the US, and internet use about 7 years — though he cautions that physical-device adoption differs from software layered on existing digital media.
