Meta drops fruit codenames for its AI models after running out of fruits
asymco · x · 2026-11-06
Business Insider reports Meta has internally decided to stop naming AI models after fruit, largely a branding call since fruit codenames don't match its lofty AI ambitions. Its latest frontier model Wonder Full was codenamed "Watermelon"; prior language and image models were "Avocado" and "Mango".
- Zuckerberg and AI chief Alexandr Wang joked on the Cheeky Pint podcast that they've run out of fruits: "The only fruit that is technically larger is the durian, and you don't want to go to the durian."
- Meta isn't alone: OpenAI dubbed one model "Garlic" internally, and Google shipped "Nano Banana" in 2025.
