CV Pioneer Michael Black: Frontier Models Bring Classical Algorithms Back Into the Mix
Michael_J_Black · x · 2026-11-06
Michael Black reflects on the decade-old dogma that neural networks should replace all classical computer vision methods. With training data it still holds, but frontier models that quickly code and test solutions make classical algorithms and bespoke code competitive again when data is scarce. He predicts hybrid architectures: high-level planners orchestrating low-level tasks solved by whichever approach—NN, classical algorithm, or on-the-fly code—works best. 'Never be religious about technology.'
